Fall Lawn Seeding in Ottawa: How to Repair Summer Lawn Damage

Featured Image

Summer can be hard on Ottawa lawns. Fall is your opportunity to repair the damage and help your lawn come back thicker and healthier next spring.

Heat, drought, chinch bugs, heavy foot traffic and everyday summer stress can all take a toll on your lawn. By late summer, you may notice thinning turf, bare patches or areas of grass that simply haven't recovered.

The good news? Fall is one of the best times to seed and repair your lawn in Ottawa.

Cooler air temperatures, warm soil and increased morning moisture create favourable conditions for grass seed to germinate and establish. The key is choosing the right type of seeding based on the condition of your lawn.

Why Seed Your Lawn in the Fall?

Grass seed needs the right combination of soil temperature, moisture and growing conditions to successfully establish.

During the fall, Ottawa lawns benefit from:

  • Cooler daytime temperatures
  • Warm soil that encourages germination
  • Increased morning dew and moisture
  • Less heat and drought stress
  • Time for new grass to establish before winter

Establishing new grass in the fall can also help create a thicker lawn the following spring. A dense lawn doesn't just look better — it also helps crowd out unwanted weeds.

Which Type of Lawn Seeding Do You Need?

Not every lawn needs the same level of repair.

At Nutri-Lawn Ottawa, we offer three approaches depending on how much help your lawn needs.

GOOD: 3-in-1 Seed & Feed

Feed it. Seed it. Thicken it.

If your lawn is generally healthy but looks a little thin after the summer, our 3-in-1 Seed & Feed may be all it needs.

The application combines:

  • Certified grass seed
  • Weed-free organic topdressing
  • Starter fertilizer

All three are applied together, making this a simple way to introduce new grass and improve the overall thickness and density of an existing lawn.

Best for: Generally healthy lawns that need a boost in thickness and density.

BETTER: Premium Overseeding + Liquid Aeration

More seed for a thicker lawn.

If your lawn has become noticeably thin, premium overseeding introduces new grass varieties throughout the existing turf.

Our Ottawa Premium Overseeding service applies 5 lbs of premium grass seed per 1,000 sq. ft. Liquid Aeration is added to help improve the soil environment and support healthier turf growth.

This option provides substantially more seed than a basic Seed & Feed application and is designed for lawns that need greater overall density.

Best for: Thin lawns that need more grass coverage but don't have extensive bare or severely damaged areas.

BEST: Slit Seeding for Damaged Lawns

When your lawn needs more serious repair.

Some lawns need more than overseeding.

If your lawn has bare areas or significant damage caused by drought, insects or other summer stresses, slit seeding may be the better solution.

A slit seeder creates shallow rows in the turf and places premium grass seed directly into the soil. This provides excellent seed-to-soil contact, an important factor in successful germination.

Rather than simply spreading seed over the lawn surface, slit seeding puts the seed where it has a better opportunity to establish.

Best for: Thin, bare, drought-damaged or insect-damaged lawns requiring more extensive repair.

Can Chinch Bug Damage Be Repaired With Grass Seed?

Yes — but it's important to deal with the chinch bugs first.

Chinch bugs feed on turfgrass and can cause extensive areas of brown, thinning or dead grass. Their damage is often mistaken for drought because populations tend to be most active in hot, dry areas of the lawn.

If active chinch bugs are still present, simply adding grass seed doesn't address the cause of the damage.

Think of recovery as a two-step process:

Step 1: Control the chinch bugs and stop additional damage.

Step 2: Repair the damaged turf with the appropriate seeding method.

The extent of the damage will determine whether Seed & Feed, Premium Overseeding or Slit Seeding is the most appropriate option.

What About Drought-Damaged Lawns?

Not every brown lawn is dead.

Grass can become dormant during periods of extreme heat and drought and begin recovering when cooler temperatures and adequate moisture return.

However, areas where turf has died or become significantly thinned may need additional seed.

Before investing in extensive lawn repair, determine whether you're dealing with temporary dormancy, insect damage or turf that actually needs to be replaced.

How Do I Know Which Seeding Service My Lawn Needs?

Start by looking at how much healthy grass remains.

Mostly healthy but a little thin?
Choose 3-in-1 Seed & Feed.

Thin throughout but still has good existing turf?
Consider Premium Overseeding + Liquid Aeration.

Bare, severely thin or damaged by drought or insects?
Your lawn may be a candidate for Slit Seeding.

The more extensive the damage, the more important seed-to-soil contact becomes.
