Extreme Heat Conditions and How it Can Affect Your Lawn.

Important message regarding the extreme heat conditions and how it can affect your lawn.

The nasty word 'drought' has hit us again. According to Environment Canada, only 0.5” (13.5 mm) of rain fell in Ottawa during the month of May. This is the lowest recorded since 1938 and the lowest in 101 years overall.

All lawns are going to suffer from heat and drought stress during this extreme heat wave. It is inevitable. The lawn may go into dormancy and turn yellow.

This is a defense mechanism and will bounce back with time.

Here are some tips on how you can help your lawn survive:

Mowing:

1. Do not mow in the heat.
2. Mow early morning or late in the evening.
3. Never cut shorter than 2.5-3” (63.5– 76.2 mm). A longer lawn will hold its moisture better.
4. Never cut more than 1/3 of the leaf blade
5. Water deeply immediately after mowing to avoid shock.

Increase watering in drought conditions.

Watering: 

1. Increase your watering schedule to 1“ (25 mm). every three days.
2. Water in the early morning or the late evening to avoid evaporation.
3. This may not keep the turf from going dormant, but it will ensure that it survives this dry period.
4. Use an empty can to help you know when you have put on 1“ (25 mm).
